Services Recycling Mobile Phones
We collect mobile phones in Monmouthshire for recycling from local schools, where we set up collection facilities.

The Environment
Under EU guidelines, a new directive (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) was introduced in April 2007. The UK legislation aims to minimise the environmental harm caused by landfill disposal of electronic equipment, including mobile phones.  It is estimated that more than 10 million phones are thrown away each year in the UK alone. Less than 10% are recycled! Phones discarded in landfill sites can cause toxic harm to the environment by leaking cadmium, lithium and mercury into the earth.

Recycling
Envirotec will recycle old mobile phones with the aim of reconditioning the units for use in under-developed countries. Where the phones are beyond economical repair, they will be disposed of safely at the new WEEE plant owned by the Simms Group in Newport. During the disposal process, precious metals (e.g. gold) can often be reclaimed.

Supporting Charity
For each mobile phone donated, Envirotec will make a financial contribution to a recognised charity, depending on the condition of the phone. Currently the main charity is the NSPCC, but other specific charities or 'good causes' can be nominated to receive the funds.

The Schools
Envirotec aims to work with schools in Monmouthshire and Newport initially.
The mobile phone recycling scheme will be run predominantly by the children, to protect the environment and raise funds for the school. Where 'Eco-Councils' are in place, this will be the first point of contact.  Large recycle boxes are available for phone collection, and a brief presentation on the subject can be arranged for any schools involved.  The school will receive a nominal amount of £2 per unit initially, and this will be reviewed as the scheme evolves.  There is no minimum quantity, and local collection can be arranged to suit the school.  A cheque will be presented to the school at the time of collection.  A poster campaign will be launched, with a prize for the best entry from each school, and a significant prize for the best in the area (details to follow)
